Three Keys to Mastering Negative Thoughts

"I'm inadequate." "That promotion is beyond reach." "I'm unlikable." These harmful self-dialogues used to assail my mind relentlessly, stealing hours and days that could have been fruitful. If only I had known how to silence this internal noise.
Have you encountered the self-sabotage stemming from your own mental chatter?
I erred by immersing myself in the company of pessimistic individuals and measuring my worth against others, attempting to steer my life. You're familiar with the type, I'm sure—the friends who perpetually gripe and find no satisfaction, or the ones who flaunt the latest designer label.
“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. “ Phillipians 4:11,12 (NLT)
In order to obtain positive results in our life, I had to learn how to embrace a new and positive mindset.
3 KEYS TO OVERCOME A NEGATIVE MINDSET
MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE
Our thoughts can keep our minds busy but not in a positive way. Before we know it, our minds can take us down a bunny trail and we spiral out of control. Negative thoughts steal mental space in your head.
“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Philippians 4:8 (NLT)
When you notice yourself thinking of something not on this list quickly choose to change your thoughts. Make a decision to not allow destructive thoughts to control your mind.
One of the best ways to fight this enemy in your mind is through memorizing scripture.
Jesus was tempted by Satan in Matthew 4. Each time Jesus used scripture as his weapon by speaking the word, “It is written…. “ Life and death are in the power of the tongue and God’s word is powerful.
Take time to memorize one verse this week to speak over a situation you are facing and watch your thought life begin to improve.
TAKE TIME OFF OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Have you noticed how much time you spend on social media? You may need to give yourself a much needed break. We lose a lot of time browsing our “feeds” on social media or watching the “idiot box” (television). Everything we watch and listen to is not good for us.
Like Eve, my thought-life and fixation on what I was constantly watching were affecting the “condition” of my heart” and mind. Have you ever become fixated on something that was unhealthy?
Sister, STOP now and refocus.
Don’t make the same mistake like Eve.
“She woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.” Genesis 3:6 (NLT)
She Looked, She Took, She Ate, and She Gave
- She saw it was good for food (Physical Pleasure)
- Pleasing to the eye (Material Possession)
- Desirable for wisdom (Valued or Significance)
Make God a priority and “Feed” on Him by Studying the Bible.
This is different from a daily devotional or Daily Quiet Time, but a time where you are digging deeper into the Bible and learning how to apply it to your life.
PRAY
Praying is having a conversation with God. I’ve spent time in prayer, but failed to take time to listen. If you want to change your mindset and renew your mind, it is imperative to listen to God. I encourage you to make sure every time you pray, also listen for God’s instructions. He is ready to help you change your mindset and give you a renewed mind.
When you experience a renewed mind you have joy and peace which fills your heart that removes worry and anxiety. You are able to focus on God and trust Him to direct your path and so you can fulfill your divine purpose.
